Anal Toys for Beginners: What to Know Before You Start

If you’re new to anal play, a little preparation goes a long way toward making the experience comfortable and enjoyable. The single most important rule: always choose a toy with a flared base. Unlike other body-safe toys, anything used anally should never be inserted without a base wide enough to prevent it from being fully absorbed.

Start small. A slim, tapered plug or a small starter set is far more forgiving for a first attempt than jumping to something larger. Generous amounts of lubricant are non-negotiable here — the area doesn’t self-lubricate the way other tissue does, so use more than feels necessary, and reapply as needed.

Go slowly, communicate throughout (with a partner or with yourself), and stop if anything feels sharp or painful — mild pressure is normal, pain is not. With the right approach, anal play can be a comfortable and pleasurable addition to your routine.
